Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go

• Some locations, such as Svalbard and some of Antarctica can only be visited in Summer when the ice is thinner, allowing your ship to cruise through.
• In the polar regions, phenomena of polar summer and winter ensure that certain experiences are limited to certain times of year. For example, you will often only be able to see the Aurora Borealis during polar winter, and enjoy the Midnight Sun in polar summer. Plan your itinerary based on what you’re most captivated by.
• Migration patterns and seasonal behaviour make certain times of year better for spotting specific animals. There will be different months that are best for spotting whales, walrus, bears and so on in different regions you might visit. • The weather in polar regions can be notoriously unpredictable, especially in Antarctica. Your itineraries may be subject to last minute change, so take every opportunity you have to go ashore. When at sea, spend as much time on deck as you can – the natural beauty and wildlife are not to be missed.
• Polar regions are chilly, and you will need to dress warmly. Pack clothing that you can wear in multiple layers and remove as necessary, as this is the best way to stay warm and still be able to cool down if needed.
• While cold, the sun is still very strong in polar regions, and reflection by ice and snow can make it very bright. Bring sunglasses and suncream.

• Go hiking in regions of stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re traversing icy mountains in Antarctica or Nunavut, or exploring along vast stretches of polar shoreline near your ports of call, there’s magnificent scenery everywhere.
• Take a kayak or canoe into brilliant blue waters. The coldest waters are often some of the bluest in the world, and kayaking through the ice floes is an experience like no other. Watch the sun glimmering off of the ice like jewels all around you.
• Learn about native cultures. In several of the places you visit in the Canadian Arctic or Greenland, there are indigenous populations whose history stretches back thousands of years. Discover their traditions and cultural heritage at a number of sites or villages. Alternatively, learn about the history of Polar exploration, listening to expert talks on the many expeditions that succeeded or failed in the ice of the North.
• Go dog-sledding in Svalbard’s icy expanse. This iconic experience is one that makes a great many bucket lists, with the opportunity to experience one of the ways humans have been navigating in polar regions for much of their history.
• See incredible celestial light shows. Whether you're travelling in the winter months or in the summer, there's always beauty waiting in the sky. In the summer, watch the sunset over a world of glittering ice, turning the glaciers to pure gold...or, in the winter, watch the Northern Lights dance in the heavens above.
